FEMEN (Ukrainian: Фемен) is a Ukrainian protest group based in Kiev, founded in 2008. The organisation became internationally known for organizing topless protests against sex tourists, international marriage agencies, sexism and other social, national and international ills.[1][4][5][6][7][8][9] Some of the goals of the organisation are: "To develop leadership, intellectual and moral qualities of the young women in Ukraine" and "To build up the image of Ukraine, the country with great opportunities for women".[3]

[edit]The organization

Female university students between 18 and 20 years old formed the backbone of the movement when it was formed in 2008.[2] In Kiev, there are about 300 active participants in the movement.[10] There are few male members of FEMEN.[1] The group comprises some 20 topless activists and 300 fully clothed members.[11][12] Most of its demonstrations are staged in Kiev,[4][8] but FEMEN has also held actions in cities like Odessa,[13] Dnipropetrovsk[14] and Zaporizhia.[15] The goals of the organization is "to shake women in Ukraine, making them socially active; to organize in 2017 a women's revolution."[10] The group has stated it has enjoyed limited success in pushing its agenda.[16] As of late April 2010 the organisation is contemplating becoming a political party to run for seats in the October 2012 Ukrainian parliamentary election.[1][10]

FEMEN justifies its provocative methods stating "This is the only way to be heard in this country. If we staged simple protests with banners, then our claims would not have been noticed".[17] The organisation plans to become the biggest and the most influential feminist movement in Europe.[3][10]

Some members claim their involvement in FEMEN caused their families to become alienated from them.[10][18]

FEMEN receives small financial backing by individuals[10][11][19] (including DJ Hell[18]).

Facebook initially blocked the FEMEN page because it suspected it was pornographic.[18]

Late April 2011 the organization claimed it was setting up international branches in Warsaw, Zurich, Rome, Tel Aviv and Rio de Janeiro.[20][21] They also claimed that after the early 2010 election of President Viktor Yanukovych the Security Service of Ukraine has attempted to intimidate the FEMEN activists.[18]

FEMEN occasionally holds rallies outside Ukraine.[22][23][24][25][26][27][28]

Several criminal cases have been opened against the organization in Ukraine a.o. on "hooliganism" and "desecration of state symbols"; and they have been fined.[29]

[edit]History

FEMEN protest in Kiev during the2010 Ukrainian presidential election

The movement was founded in 2008 by Anna Hutsol (born 1984, most FEMEN members are younger[2]) after she became attuned to the sad stories of Ukrainian woman duped by false promises from abroad:[2] "I set up FEMEN because I realised that there was a lack of women activists in our society; Ukraine is male-oriented and women take a passive role."[30] Initially Femen gained attention by demonstrating while dressed in underwear: however, in August 2009 Oksana Shachko bared her breasts at a protest in Kiev.[31] Since then Femen have regularly protested 'topless', and the organization has staged noticeable erotically-flavored rallies (among others) near the building of the Cabinet of Ministers, at Maidan Nezalezhnosti, the Turkish embassy in Ukraine[2] and in front of the Iranian embassy to oppose the expected execution of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani.[32] While most of the protests have been confined to going ‘topless’, in October 2010 Shachko exposed her buttocks outside a locked toilet in a demonstration to protest about the lack of public toilets in Kiev;[11]and four of the group members staged a similar protest in Kiev in February 2011.[33]

Hutsol is adamantly opposed to legalizing prostitution in Ukraine.[2] FEMEN proposed the introduction of criminal responsibility for the use of sex industry services late in May 2009.[34] FEMEN has protested against what they argue are moves being made by the Ukrainian government to legalize prostitution during the EURO 2012 championships.[35] The group asked UEFA and the Ukrainian government to create a social program devoted to the problem ofsex tourism and prostitution in Ukraine; to inform football fans that prostitution is illegal in Ukraine; and to take additional steps to fight against prostitution and sex tourism.[36]

A demonstration by a group called RU FEMEN in the Russian capital Moscow late April 2011[37] was immediately denounced as a fake offspring of FEMEN.[20][21] FEMEN accused Russian political party United Russia of having set up this RU FEMEN.[20][21]

[edit]Cultural and political image

FEMEN's actions received criticisms in Ukraine for "being meaningless" or "being outright tasteless".[11] According to Ukrainian gender studies expert Tetyana Bureychak, most Ukrainian women are unimpressed by FEMEN.[38] According to sociologist Oleh Demkiv of the Lviv University, FEMEN does not enjoy popular support.[39]

According to Reuters "Femen represents -- albeit on a modest scale -- one of the few regular street protest movements".[12] Some parents of FEMEN activists have wondered if they were addicted to drugs.[10] In Ukraine the FEMEN activists have been labeled (in 2010) "girls Tymoshenko" and/or "Putin's agents[10][18][relevant? – discuss]; it must be noted that FEMEN has demonstrated against Putin[40] and the organization never did sympathize with Tymoshenko.[41] The organization claims to be an independent organization "Beyond politics and beyond religion".[10]

The group's actions have been reported in news-outlets such as CNN, BBC News,[6] Der Spiegel, Die Welt, Independent.ie,[3] France 24,[30] on Euronews,[32] Kyiv Post,[42] Mizozo,[43]USA Today,[44] Reuters,[12] The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal.[27]

Drug Czar Denies that Marijuana Users Are Arrested and Forced into Treatment

http://stopthedrugwar.org/speakeasy/2012/may/03/drug_czar_denies_marijuana_users

by Scott Morgan, May 03, 2012, 02:58am

On Tuesday, I had a chance to question the drug czar about his enthusiasm for drug treatment at an event in D.C. Mike Riggs at Reason has good coverage of the exchange.

The other good question came from Scott Morgan, of StopTheDrugWar.org, who asked if Kerlikowske supported compulsory treatment of casual drug users, and if arresting marijuana users and forcing them into treatment was an effective policy. This time, Kerlikowske played dumb:

"Again, that’s a bit of a myth. If someone’s arrested for a small amount of marijuana, and the determination is made they have to go into treatment, treatment beds and space are a valuable commodity. I think professionals can clearly assess when someone is in need of treatment. Compulsory treatment is not something I’m as familiar with in great detail at the local level."

It's an incredible thing to say, so utterly divorced from reality and plainly absurd to anyone remotely aware of how our marijuana policies and criminal justice system operate. It's hardly a secret that when the cops catch you with pot, they bust you and haul your ass into court where you're ordered to attend classes about how you shouldn’t smoke pot.

Our courts are open to the public and you can just walk in and watch this happen to a dozen people in one afternoon. It's worth doing if you haven't before.

The drug czar says that addiction is a medical condition, but it's certainly the only medical condition with which you get diagnosed not by a doctor but by a judge in criminal court based solely on the fact that a cop found marijuana in your pocket one single time.

Questions for Cardinal Brady DESPITE ALL that has happened in relation to the clerical abuse of children, the Vatican’s response still revolves around the requirements of canon law and the protection of church authority.

The Irish Times - Thursday, May 3, 2012

Questions for Cardinal Brady

DESPITE ALL that has happened in relation to the clerical abuse of children, the Vatican’s response still revolves around the requirements of canon law and the protection of church authority. Unambiguous endorsement of the actions taken by Cardinal Séan Brady regarding the late Fr Brendan Smyth, following the BBC’s This World documentary by reporter Darragh MacIntyre, has firmly placed the importance of internal discipline and obedience above personal conscience.

Senior Vatican figure Charles Scicluna said Cardinal Brady should not resign because he had done his duty to the church and to society as a note-taker in 1975 when Fr Smyth’s activities were investigated. This move to minimise the role of the then Fr Brady as an investigator and to insist he had no questions to answer in the aftermath of the programme was unusually quick and determined. The question remains, was society best served and were vulnerable children adequately protected?

The protection offered from Rome for its “notary” was so comprehensive that Cardinal Brady later conceded he had been “heartened by it”. The incident represents Vatican politics at its most forceful. Following last year’s visitation by senior church figures and publication of an edited report on problems facing the Catholic Church, internal doctrinal discipline is being imposed and, clearly, administrative failures and cover-ups from the past do not figure on that agenda.

Few would doubt Cardinal Brady’s sincerity when he says he was outraged, appalled and felt betrayed when he discovered, despite his report and recommendations by his bishop, that Brendan Smyth had continued to abuse children for almost 20 years. Explanation for his lack of perseverance in the case: that he was operating “in a culture of deference and respectful silence”, is credible. State agencies and senior officials were equally unwilling to raise the spectre of clerical scandal.

Cardinal Brady behaved correctly under canon law. But what about criminal law, the law of the State? Under canon law, the then Fr Brady required two sexually abused children to swear they would not tell anyone else about the offences, while the parents of one child were not informed and others were abused as a consequence. During those years and later, members of the hierarchy engaged in systematic cover-ups, effectively involving conspiracies to conceal crimes against children. Thankfully, that situation has changed. The Catholic Church adopted guidelines that provide for the protection of children and reporting of offences to the Garda Síochána. To place the matter beyond doubt, the Government has published legislation making the withholding of such information a criminal offence.

These distressing events took place 37 years ago. But an elapse of time provides no justification for what occurred. Monsignor Scicluna said the people of Ireland needed leaders who had learned the hard way about child protection. That proposition is questionable, especially if a canon law defence is still the priority at the highest level of the church. Rightly or wrongly, however, Cardinal Brady will oversee implementation of a Vatican report designed, in his own words, “to contribute to the ongoing spiritual and moral renewal of the Catholic Church.” Living up to that mission will be a lot more arduous given what has emerged in recent days.

JDR Head ShotWASHINGTON, D.C.— Sen. Jay Rockefeller today sent a letter to Lord Justice Brian Leveson, who is currently leading a special judicial investigation into phone hacking and other alleged illegal activities by News International, a subsidiary of News Corporation.  The letter asks Lord Leveson if his inquiry has uncovered any new information suggesting that News International’s conduct involved U.S. citizens or violated U.S. laws.

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, Rockefeller has jurisdiction over media and communications issues in the United States. Rockefeller raised questions about the extent of News Corp’s phone hacking last July when the allegations were broadly reported in the U.S.  Today’s new request for information comes as the Leveson Inquiry and other British investigations are disclosing large volumes of new information and documents about News International’s widespread misconduct.

Daniel Chong, the UC San Diego student who was left in a Drug Enforcement Agency holding cell for nearly five days, ignored with no food or water

Daniel Chong, the UC San Diego student who was left in a Drug Enforcement Agency holding cell for nearly five days, said the time spent in his cell was a life-altering experience. NBC 7's Tony Shin reports.

Daniel Chong, the UC San Diego student who was left in a Drug Enforcement Administration holding cell for nearly five days, said the time spent in his cell was a life-altering experience.

The 23-year-old spoke with NBCSanDiego and said he was increasingly worried throughout the days he spent in a 5 ft. by 10 ft. cell, where he could not spread his arms out wide.

“They never came back, ignored all my cries and I still don’t know what happened,” he said. “I’m not sure how they could forget me.”

As NBCSanDiego was first to report Saturday, the DEA confirmed its agents were investigating an incident in which a suspect, arrested Saturday, April 21, was detained at their office for several days and allegedly forgotten about.

Chong said he was at a friend’s house in University City celebrating 4/20, a day many marijuana users set aside to smoke, when agents came inside and raided the residence. Chong was then taken to the DEA office in Kearny Mesa.

He said agents questioned him, and then told him he could go home. One agent even offered him a ride, Chong said. No criminal charges were filed against him.

But Chong did not go home that night. Instead, he was placed in a cell for five days without any human contact and was not given food or drink. In his desperation, he said he was forced to drink his own urine.

“I had to do what I had to do to survive….I hallucinated by the third day,” Chong said. “I was completely insane.”

Chong said he lost roughly 15 pounds during the time he was alone. His lawyer confirmed that Chong ingested a powdery substance found inside the cell. Later testing revealed the substance was methamphetamine.

After days of being ignored, Chong said he tried to take his own life by breaking the glass from his spectacles with his teeth and then attempting to carve “Sorry mom,” on his arm. He said nurses also found pieces of glass in his throat, which led him to believe he ingested the pieces purposefully.

Chong said he could hear DEA employees and people in neighboring cells. He screamed to let them know he was there, but no one replied. He kicked the door, but no one came to get him.
By the time DEA officers found Chong in his cell Wednesday morning Chong was completely incoherent, said Iredale.

“I didn’t think I would come out,” Chong said.

He said when employees discovered him in the cell that they looked confused and nervous. A DEA employee rode with him to the hospital, where they paid for Chong’s visit.

He spent three days in the intensive care unit at Sharp Hospital and his kidneys were close to failing.

Chong and his lawyer spoke to the media on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the claim they will file with the federal court system on Wednesday.

“He was at the wrong place at the wrong time,” said his lawyer Gene Iredale, who compared Chong’s experience to the torture suffered by inmates at in the Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad, Iraq

The DEA has not apologized to Chong, said Iredale.

The incident also caused Chong to miss his midterms at UCSD. He said he does not know if he will return to school, as his perspective on life has changed since his isolation.

San Diego defense attorney Gretchen Von Helms said the victim could get millions if he files a lawsuit.

"In all my years of practice I've never heard of the DEA or any Federal government employee simply forgetting about someone that they have in their care," she said.

"There has to be repercussions if people do not follow the safety and the care when they have a human being in their custody."

Cannabis: One Million Plants Seized in Homegrown Weed Farms Explosion - International Business Times

Cannabis: One Million Plants Seized in Homegrown Weed Farms Explosion

More than one million cannabis plants have been seized in the UK over the past two years as the number of cannabis farms discovered has doubled from four years ago.

Police officers have confiscated a total of 1,096,797 cannabis plants over a two-year period at a street value of £207m, according to a report from the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo).

Follow IBTimes UK
  • -->
    • Google Plus

    -->
  • Police intelligence has said the increase in the number of cannabis farms poses a "significant risk" to the UK, because the rising commercial cultivation of cannabis leads to an increase in burglary, violence and the use of firearms.

It is now thought that more people are growing cannabis for personal use to avoid giving money to gangs who control the drugs.

Figures show that a total of 7,865 cannabis farms were discovered in 2011/12, an increase on the 4,951 that were identified in 2008/09 and more than double the 3,032 farms found in 2007/08.

The report suggests people are setting up smaller farms in residential properties to decrease the risk of detection. It also acknowledges that the recession has led to an increase in the number of people growing cannabis for their own use, as demonstrated by the rise in the number of offences for personal cultivation.

    Like us on Facebook

The number of offences related to cannabis production is also increasing, up from 14,982 in 2010/11 to 16,464 in 2011/12.

The area with the most number of cannabis farms discovered in the UK was West Yorkshire with 936, equivalent to 42 factories per 100,000 people, according to Acpo's figures.

South Yorkshire, where 851 farms were discovered, had 64 farms per 100,000 people, the highest in the country.

Peter Reynolds, elected leader of cannabis reform group Clear, believes the rise of cannabis farms for personal use may be attributable to people preferring to grow their own drugs than give money to gangs.

"There is a very strong, continuous demand for cannabis, which is not going to go away," he said.

"People are more educated about cannabis now and more people are educated about its risks and aware that it is 100 times safer than alcohol.

"People who have made the conscious decision to use cannabis are now doing so without passing on the money to illegal gangs, who use the money for activities such as human trafficking."

Commander Allan Gibson of the Metropolitan Police, Acpo's lead on cannabis cultivation, said: "Commercial cannabis cultivation continues to pose a significant risk to the UK. Increasing numbers of organised crime groups are diverting into this area of criminality, but we are determined to continue to disrupt such networks and reduce the harm caused by drugs.

"This profile provides a detailed analysis of the current threat from commercial cultivation of cannabis and the work undertaken by law enforcement agencies to combat the threat. It provides a framework to facilitate future planning and decision-making for preventative, legislative and enforcement activity to make the UK a hostile environment for cannabis cultivators."

Danny Kushlick, head of external affairs for the Transform Drug Policy Foundation, said believes taxing and regulating cannabis will help stop the problems highlighted in Acpo's report .

"The lucrative skunk business is just one more way to make untaxed profits for those who are prepared to take the risk," Kushlick said.

"Drug law enforcement is counterproductive at any time, but in an era of financial stricture it is tantamount to burning money.

"Cannabis should be legally regulated precisely because of these risks, not because it is perceived as a safe drug. It would enable the government to take over the trade from organised crime, to licence growers and vendors, control price and purity, and to put in place age controls on purchasing."

According to the 2010/11 British Crime Survey, an estimated 6.8 percent of 16 to 59-year-olds (2.2 million people) had used cannabis in the last year, an increase from 6.6 percent in 2009/10.

Tabitha Browne - Alive and just back from the laundrette (-: Hi Tabitha :-)

    BRING CORBY HOME

Some People choose to stay quiet. Some people choose to stand back. Some people choose to turn their back on a friend. Are you that person.? Then you are exactly the person I’m looking for. I’m looking for people who aren’t going to sit back and let others do things for you. I’m looking for people who’s weapon is to question the issues before believing them. I’m looking for the truth of what is really happening on this planet.

Most of you know that I have a beef with the National Australia Bank as well as all other banks in Australia who are fraudulently stealing our homes from everyday mum and dads, Illegally. That fight continues and the film does too. As we click along through the court process, I wanted to turn my attention onto something far more serious for one person in particular. Schapelle Corby… remember, she’s that guilty woman who was stupid enough to take drugs into Bali. Yep, that’s what I said too. What if I told you that Corby actually didn’t!! What if I told you that I have the facts, transcripts, emails etc of the evidence to prove that Corby is guilty of nothing more than getting on a Plane to Bali.

The fact is this. It’s true… Schapelle Corby boarded a plane to Bali – GUILTY! So what, millions of Australian’s board planes every day. However, this plane on this day also had a package, the size of a boogie board filled with drugs. Obviously you saw what the media presented to us.. At any time did you stop to think that it seems mad for someone to bring that amount of drugs in a boogie bag to a country that kills prisoners. I had to wonder that if I was to be stupid enough to take drugs into a country that has a death penalty, I certainly wouldn’t bring them in by the truck load. But we’ve been led to believe that Schapelle Corby had the balls to do just that.

    Yeah Right!!

I’m not interested in people wanting to argue whether she is guilty or not. Anyone that argues the facts are either stupid or blind. The facts are now fully available and yet Ms Corby continues to rott in a shit hole in Bali. So i’ll introduce you all to the evidence in a second.

I now want to draw a picture for you. Let’s just say Grandma wants to take a trip to Bali because she’s never been out of Australia. She decides to take the grand kiddies on a big plane. However, when she gets off the plane her Grand daughter is stopped by Police and searched. Grandma thinks to herself…. “I don’t know why they would mant to stop my little suzy with her pigtails”. Then the officer opens up a bag of dope that little Suzy was carrying. The question is this… would you allow little Suzy to live one minute in the same Jail Corby is in? No.. So let’s say the girl is a bit older. Let’s call her Schapelle. Can someone tell me the difference between little Suzy and Shapelle.?

One word my fellow Australian’s……… CHAMBERLIN.

For those that know me, you can certainly attest to the fact that I’m the Worlds big critic when it comes to people taking drugs into foreign countries. I’m also the one that Judged Schapelle guilty because I was led to believe the media, the 24 hour a day broadcasts. That was a ratings killer in Australia. Some people got very rich. The last thing anyone needs now is to know that she’s innocent. Can’t she just hurry up and die in their or go nuts or something… The answer is, Corby is already dead. She’s dead inside because her Aussie mates left her there to rott. We LEFT HER THERE. That is going to change immediately.

I don’t know Schapelle and to be honest I don’t need to know her. But I do need to stand up against injustice when it’s right in front of me. The Evidence can be found at http://www.expendable.tv/p/exhibits.html All I ask for is that you DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT I’M SAYING!!! I don’t want this to be easy. I want all those critics that were like me to view the REAL evidence. If like me you see that evidence and want to do something about it then use the one weapon that all of us have got… your voice.

Sign your name to CORBY! That’s right. Tell Schapelle that we’re on our way. Tell our friends in Bali that we’re STAYING AWAY. The people of Bali are beautiful people but right now they have a good Aussie chick sitting in a hole waiting to die because our own Government chose to leave her there.

If they won’t go get her then I’ll do it myself. Sign the petition. Just add your name and a contact number or email. When we get her out I’m sure she’ll want to write you a letter to thank you personally. If Australia has no guts anymore like the diggers who fought for us under this Country’s name then we’re all lost.. Where on earth did the Aussie Digger go when we needed him. This Aussie chick is alone and she needs some Aussie mates to cheer her up.

Who’s with me. C’mon, who wants to prove what Aussie’s do for each other.. I dare ya. How about this, every person that puts their name to this petition and who donates any money for the film “I’ll personally buy you a beer when this is over”. How’s that. One beer for every Aussie that pitches in to bring this Corby Chick home!! Cheers.

To Live With Honour ~ by Bill the Butcher - Copyright B Purkayastha 2012

To Live With Honour ~ by Bill the Butcher

My way is not the way of violence, I thought
I have seen enough killing, I thought
I have seen the land burn
I want only to be left in peace
I want to tend my fields, bring up my children
Find a way to pass the years
    Honourably.

Why should I kindle the fire, I thought
My village is my world, I thought
The quarrels of kings are the quarrels of kings
And nothing to do with me.
My family and I, we could live out the storm
    I thought, and come through
    Peaceably.

A man came, he flew down from the sky
In a helicopter from the big city.
He read from papers and told us
That we were now all free.
While men with guns stood beside him and frowned
He told us we now had freedom, and we had
    Democracy.

A man from the city came and he took my land
Which my ancestors had tilled for centuries
He told the court that it was his by right
And he had bought the documents to prove it.
So the judge gave him my land,
The judge smiled and gave him my land
    Legally.

The foreign soldiers came, they came to my house
In the dead of night, and broke down the door
They made my daughters cry, they shouted at my wife
    They took what they wanted
    My family’s honour, my honour
They took it all, and said it was by the rules
    They said it was done
    Properly.

My son found a bride and planned to wed
And I called the village to the marriage feast –
There were other guests high overhead
And they bombed my son and his wife
They snuffed out their wedded life
Before it began, and afterwards they apologised
Far away in the city they apologised
    Nicely.

The police chief said he wanted my girl
He wanted to make her his wife
He wanted to get a sex slave for life
Now my daughter walks in fear
For she knows he hovers near
Her dreams are filled with his voice, raised
    Threateningly.

The Taliban came, they gave me a gun
They said they were of the people.
They said I could stand up
Or I could lie in the dirt
They said it was my choice to make
They warned me not to make a mistake
Then they went away, into the night
    Quietly.

Today at last I took up the gun
I knew it had no answers
But the choice before me was stark
Die in the light or die in the dark.
I do not fight for Taliban
    Or for Freedom or Democracy.
All I can do is choose my way
    To live or to die
    Honourably.
